Gastric Sleeve Procedure

gastric sleeve stomach diagram

The Gastric Sleeve allows you to lose weight by helping to control portion size. The sleeve helps you eat less feeling full sooner, and it also allows the sense of satiety to last longer. The food you eat passes through the digestive tract in the usual manner, allowing it to be fully absorbed in the body. Digestion and absorption of food and nutrients is not changed.

The Procedure
During the Gastric Sleeve procedure, a thin “sleeve” of stomach is created (1) and divided from the rest of the stomach. The sleeve is about the size of a banana. The rest of the stomach (2) is removed.

The Gastric Sleeve procedure is performed using laparoscopic surgery. This is a minimally invasive technique that allows the procedure to be performed without making large incisions. Laparoscopic surgery results in shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, smaller scars, and less pain than open surgical procedures.

The procedure takes 40 to 60 minutes minutes and is performed using general anaesthesia. Patients stay in the hospital overnight and usually return to normal activities in 5 to 7 days. Full recovery usually takes about 2 weeks.
