A well-rounded and nutritious diet is often the key to weight loss. Following a healthy diet can help improve your weight maintenance, as well as your overall health. After a weight loss procedure, it’s even more crucial that you adhere to a well-balanced diet. This can become increasingly difficult if healthy meals aren’t always convenient.
Regularly eating a healthy breakfast can help you to feel more full throughout the day, and provide you with the nutrients that will keep you energized all day long. If mornings are too rushed for you, as they are for many, eating a healthy breakfast might not be as attainable. Here are five healthy on-the-go breakfast ideas that are perfect for busy mornings!
What better way to start your day than with a delicious smoothie?
You can combine a variety of healthy breakfast foods into a blender and be on your way in no time at all! Preparation for a smoothie can take three to five minutes in the morning, and you can even take it with you as you leave. To save even more time out of your morning routine, you can prepare some of the ingredients the night before. Try chopping and portioning fruit and yogurt the night before, and even make sure your smoothie cup and blender are clean and accessible.
Here are some ideas of healthy ingredients for a smoothie:
- Greek yogurt
- Almond, rice or soya milk
- Water or ice cubes
- Protein powder
- Vanilla extract
- Green tea
- Flax seeds
- Lemon juice
If you are new to smoothies, begin with a simple combination like almond milk, protein powder and fruit of your choice.[i]
Overnight oats are a non-cook method of oatmeal that is usually much creamier and is eaten cold. They are usually prepared the night before, resulting in a quick and easy breakfast solution. Simply combine all your chosen ingredients into a container, and then mix, and store in the fridge overnight. Some ingredients might include:
- Almond, rice or soya milk
- Greek yogurt
- Chia seeds
Enhance the flavour of your overnight oats with cinnamon, vanilla extract or maple syrup.
There’s no need to carefully watch a frying pan while you prepare eggs and vegetables in the morning for a nutritious breakfast. Egg muffins provide a simple solution for an easy breakfast that you can prepare for the entire week and eat while on-the-go!
All you need is:
- 6 eggs
- 1 green pepper
- 1 red pepper
- 1 onion
- 1 tbsp. minced garlic
- 2 cups of spinach
- 2 cups of mushrooms
- Extra virgin olive oil
First, pre-heat your oven to 350° C. You can begin preparing your food by cracking 4 eggs into a bowl, and then adding only the egg whites of the remaining two eggs. Mix and set aside. Next, it’s time to wash and dice all your vegetables. In a pan, heat the extra virgin olive oil and add the chopped peppers and onion. Soften your vegetables for roughly five minutes and then add your mushrooms and spinach. After about two minutes, add your minced garlic, and stir for 30 seconds. Add your softened vegetables with the eggs and stir.
Using a measuring cup to pour, disperse evenly into a greased muffin tin. Bake for 15 minutes and then allow to cool for five to ten minutes.[ii] You can serve right away or store them inside the fridge for up to a week. Bon appetite!
Fruit and Yogurt
Fruit and yogurt is a simple and quick breakfast option that is healthy, and will provide you with a bounty of energy for the day. Try grabbing an apple or banana and a yogurt container on your way out the door, for a solution that requires no preparation at all. If you have time the night before, you can slice oranges, mangoes, and melon, or portion a variety of berries to mix with your favourite Greek yogurt in a container. There’s a wide variety of fruit and yogurt combinations that you can try!
Healthy Morning Routine
A healthy breakfast can easily be incorporated into a healthy morning routine. Try your best to get at least eight hours of sleep at night so that you are well rested for the day ahead. Try waking up an extra five minutes early and doing some light stretches while still in bed.
