What Is Revision Surgery?

Revision surgery refers to procedures performed on patients who have already had bariatric surgery performed by another physician and have either had complications or have regained or failed to lose weight successfully from the initial surgery. In some cases, patients seek revision surgery for a bariatric surgery procedure that used techniques or technology that are now outdated and need to be upgraded.

It takes specialized skills to redo a procedure performed by another physician. Our bariatric surgeons have extensive training in performing weight loss surgery and specialize in achieving superior results to ensure your revision weight loss surgery helps you achieve the results you want.

How Does Revision Surgery Work?

Your SmartShape surgeon will help you decide which revision surgery best suits your needs. Your surgeon may recommend one of the following procedures, depending on which one you had initially:

Many options are available depending on the specific reasons you are considering revision surgery.

How does revision surgery affect type 2 diabetes?

Bariatric surgery has emerged as an innovative alternative option in the management of type 2 diabetes. Many 5-year studies show that bariatric surgery leads to a profound and durable resolution of type 2 diabetes.

These procedures can result in sustained body weight loss and significant improvement in obesity-related comorbidities. Surgical weight loss procedures are recognized by Diabetes Canada to lead to significant and sustained weight loss and remission of type 2 diabetes.

Can I resume physical activity after my revision surgery?

We recommend that you start walking up to 30 minutes per day as soon as you are able. However, strenuous exercise is not recommended until 3 to 4 weeks after your procedure. We recommend that you do not lift more than 10 to 15 pounds for at least 2 weeks.
