Choosing The Right Bariatric Surgery

SmartShape Weight Loss Centre

Have you been considering having weight loss surgery? Are you unsure which procedure may be right for you?  Here are some fast facts about each of the bariatric surgical procedures that SmartShape provides. All of the procedures we offer are performed laparoscopically. This is a minimally invasive technique that allows the procedure to be performed without making large incisions. Laparoscopic surgery results in a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, smaller scars, and less pain than open surgical procedures.

GASTRIC SLEEVE

→The Gastric Sleeve procedure takes about 60-90 minutes to complete and is performed using general anesthesia. You will stay in the hospital for one day, usually returning to normal activities in 5 to 7 days and enjoying a full recovery in about 2 weeks.

→With the removal of 2/3 of your stomach, the Gastric Sleeve procedure will ensure that small meals will satisfy you. You will gain control of your hunger, and the constant craving for food will subside. The part of the stomach that is removed produces a hormone called Ghrelin. When the ghrelin is removed, it allows you to feel satisfied for longer periods of time before you feel hungry again.

→Studies have shown that following the Gastric Sleeve procedure, people are able to achieve and maintain an average weight loss of 70% of excess body weight in the first year.

MINI GASTRIC BYPASS (MGB)

→The MGB is gaining popularity as the modern alternative to traditional gastric bypass surgery. Tracking research data has accumulated to show the MGB provides excellent results, a simpler, more streamlined procedure and reduced complication rates.

→The MGB works in two ways to help you lose weight. First, it reduces the size of your stomach, restricting the amount you can eat. Next, it reduces the absorption of what food you eat, bypassing a portion of your intestines. This dual-stage approach has been shown to be highly effective when combined with changes to eating and lifestyle habits.

REVISION BARIATRIC SURGERY

Revision Bariatric Surgery is surgery that is performed on patients who have already undergone a form of Bariatric Surgery (i.e. Gastric Band, or Gastric Bypass) and have either had complications or have not had the results they hoped for from their initial surgery. Some issues may be: severe persistent reflux, food intolerance, band slips or erosions, or even historic bariatric procedures that are no longer performed and may need to be reversed or revised.

→To be a candidate for a Revision Bariatric Surgery procedure at SmartShape, your BMI and medical criteria must meet our selected Revision Bariatric Surgery requirements, and you are prepared to make changes in your eating habits and lifestyle.

→When you talk with one of our Surgeons we can help advise you on the Revision Bariatric Surgery that would best suit your needs. Depending on your individual history and choices, the initial Bariatric Procedure would be ‘revised’ (converted), and the new Bariatric Procedure would be performed.
