We encourage you to connect with us for a free consultation so we can address any further questions you may have and to discuss whether LAP-BAND® surgery is right for you.
The LAP-BAND® procedure is performed laparoscopically which is a surgical technique where only small incisions are made. The LAP-BAND® consists of three parts: One, the band. Two, the tubing. Three, the port.
The band is placed around the top of the stomach. This leaves about an inch of stomach above the band that we call “the pouch”. The pouch is unique because it is richly supplied with sensors and receptors that send signals to the brain that when this part of the stomach fills with food… it’s full.
Each time you take a bite of food, it gets temporarily held up by the LAP-BAND®. The pouch at the top of the stomach fills and you feel full from eating smaller portions of food. SmartShape™ Weight Loss Centre uses only the premium Apollo LAP-BAND® and includes a five year AfterCare Program.
Studies have shown that on average, a patient who has the LAP-BAND® procedure, will lose up to 50 – 55 % of their excess weight and that most of that loss will occur in the first year.
Most patients are ready to return to work and normal daily activities a week after LAP-BAND® surgery. Most gradually resume strenuous activities in approximately 3 to 4 weeks. After an overnight stay in the hospital, patients are allowed to return home to recover. If needed, 24/7 after-hours support and a follow-up consultation with your surgeon are available. The frequency of band adjustments varies from person to person and is customized to your individual progress. Although each person is different, in the first year, you can expect anywhere from four to six adjustments, but some people have as few as one. Approximately 10% of people are able to lose weight at the desired pace without any adjustment at all. LAP-BAND® adjustments are much less common once you have achieved your weight loss goals.
For clients that do not live close to our clinics, there are over 40 affiliated healthcare professionals across Canada that can work with our team to ensure you are getting your LAP-BAND® adjustments as needed.
The LAP-BAND® procedure may be the right solution if you:
The LAP-BAND® procedure is performed laparoscopically which is a surgical technique where only small incisions are made. Laparoscopic surgery is a low-risk, minimally invasive technique with many benefits including smaller surgical scars, less pain, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery and reduced risks of infection.
During the first week after the procedure, you will feel some pain. The discomfort is usually restricted to the laparoscopic port sites and can be managed with oral pain medication. You may also experience mild “gas pain” that settles in a couple of days. Your doctor will give you instructions regarding pain management.
No, the port is not visible. The port is placed under the skin and fat and anchored to the abdominal wall muscles.
In an effort to reduce the need to travel, we have adapted our follow-up programs to meet the needs of our out-of-province and long distance LAP-BAND® clients. We have an extensive network of affiliated physicians and nurses in over 50 cities and towns across Canada and are continuing to train affiliates to meet our clients’ needs. These healthcare professionals have been trained by our surgeons to perform LAP-BAND® adjustments for our patients. Adjustments are performed after a consultation with our nurses. Our nurses will confirm the timing and fill volume required for the adjustment.
One of the important features of the SmartShape program is working with our team to decide when LAP-BAND® adjustments are indicated. Here are a few questions that can help decide if an adjustment is needed:
If the answer to these questions is yes, then it may be time for an adjustment. You should call the clinic and speak to one of our nurses about having an assessment.
For most individuals, the first adjustment takes place approximately four weeks after their LAP-BAND® procedure. The band will continue to be adjusted over time until you reach the ideal adjustment that is most beneficial to your weight loss success.
Although each person is different, in the first year, you can expect anywhere from four to six adjustments, but some people have as little as one.
Yes, SmartShape welcomes out-of-town and out-of-province patients. The LAP-BAND® procedure is performed at our Clearpoint Surgical Centre Toronto. After surgery, you will be monitored overnight in our facility and will be discharged the next day. Once you leave the facility, most patients are able to return to their normal activities in about 7-10 days.
Out-of-province patients may be eligible for funding from your home province health plan. Please contact your home province health department to see if you qualify, and if so, for what amount/elements of your procedure. (Coverage varies by province)

Although the LAP-BAND® is meant to be permanent, it can be safely and easily removed if necessary. If the LAP-BAND® is removed, it is possible that the weight loss may not be sustained. If you choose to have the LAP-BAND® removed, it is possible to have the Gastric Sleeve or Mini Gastric Bypass as a revision procedure.
The LAP-BAND® System has been proven to be a safe and permanent implanted device which does not deteriorate or break down with time. This is one of the reasons that SmartShape Weight Loss Centre uses only the LAP-BAND® System. There is no reason to expect that theLAP-BAND® would ever need to be replaced.
