Positivity and Your Weight Loss Journey During COVID-19

inspiration, opportunity

2020 has been a challenging year.  The Coronavirus has brought unprecedented fear and change into our lives.   How do we continue on our weight loss journey during COVID-19 when there is so much out there that is unknown and that we can’t control.  We are at home in isolation wondering what comes next?  What is important to remember, though, is that with any crisis comes opportunity for positive change.  It isn’t going to be easy, but if you try to follow the steps below you could very well be on your way to being your best, most healthy self.  Now is the time to make positive change in your life, and when you do, you will be ready to tackle anything that comes your way when the restrictions are lifted and life goes back to normal.

1. Be productive with your time

This challenge has given us the gift of time.  We are not stuck in traffic commuting to work, and we aren’t running around to dance classes and errands.  How we use our time will determine if we are going to be the best version of ourselves.  What this time gives us is the opportunity to live a healthy lifestyle in the comfort of our own homes.  We do not have the hectic pace and built in excuse that the diet or exercise starts next week.  What better way to spend time than making sure you and your family are eating healthy, home cooked meals.  Once you have had your healthy meal, you will still have time to get out for a walk.  The outdoors are still open.  Take some time and explore your neighbourhood and get some fresh air.  Not only is it good for you in your weight loss journey, but your family will understand and respect your new found determination as well.

2. Keep a positive mindset

This is not the time to give into the negative voice telling you that the world is coming to an end.  Focus your energy on being positive.  We have been given the opportunity to slow down our lives and to spend time with our families in a way that we have never been able to do.  Take the positives that come out of these circumstances and share these stories and feelings with friends and family on the phone, or through social media.  Start writing that journal, or reading that self help book that you bought last year.  If you start following step 1 above, the positive energy you will be feeling from eating healthy and getting exercise will be contagious.  Your family and friends will see the difference in you and will send that positive energy back to you.

3. Limit media consumption

During crisis, we often spend even more time consuming media.  This is counter intuitive to being productive with our time and keeping a positive mindset.  All of the bad news out there is not good for our mental health.  You do not need to know what is going on 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  Limit yourself to 5 minutes in the morning, and 5 minutes in the afternoon and ignore it for the rest of the day.  These “breaking news” headlines have no bearing on whether or not you are going to have your best day.  Chances are, if you read enough of these headlines, your mindset will become negative and you will not use your time in the best ways for your weight loss.  Breaking the hold that news coverage has over you will be powerful when Coronavirus has passed us by and the world starts getting back to normal.

Despite the challenges that we face to our weight loss journey during COVID-19, we have been given an opportunity to change our lives in a positive way.  We have been given the gift of time which is what we need to change bad habits and work towards achieving our weight loss goals.  Start being your better self today.  Stay safe and stay healthy!
