COVID-19 UPDATE
SmartShape™ has helped thousands of Canadians from Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario, as well as Quebec, Alberta, and surrounding areas experience significant and sustained weight loss with modern weight loss procedures, such as the revision surgery option. If you have had bariatric surgery performed by another physician and are experiencing complications, SmartShape Weight Loss Centres can help. Our primary goal is ensuring that you have all the information that you need to make a confident and informed decision in determining if revision surgery is right for you.
Below, we provide a comprehensive overview of revision surgery, so you can learn how it will either reverse your existing bariatric procedure or revise it to help you achieve significant and sustained weight loss. For more information about SmartShape Weight Loss Centre and revision weight loss surgery, visit our FAQs page. We encourage you to connect with us for a free consultation to discuss your specific needs and to address any questions that you may have, and to find out if revision weight loss surgery is your best option.
Revision surgery refers to procedures performed on patients who have already had bariatric surgery performed by another physician (i.e., vertical banded gastroplasty or VBG, gastric band, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, gastric sleeve) and have either had complications or have regained or failed to lose weight successfully from the initial surgery. In some cases, patients seek revision surgery for a bariatric surgery procedure that used techniques or technology that are now outdated and need to be upgraded.
It takes specialized skills to redo a procedure performed by another physician. Our bariatric surgeons have extensive training in performing weight loss surgery and specialize in achieving superior results to ensure your revision weight loss surgery helps you achieve the results you want.
Your SmartShape surgeon will help you decide which revision surgery will best suit your needs. Depending on the initial bariatric procedure, the gastric sleeve, mini gastric bypass, or LAP-BAND® may be recommended. There are many options available depending on the specific reasons why revision surgery is being considered.
To determine the path forward, including the type of revision surgery you may need, it is important to set up a consultation with your surgeon to review your options.

Bariatric surgery has emerged as an innovative alternative option in the management of Type 2 diabetes. Many 5-year studies are showing that revision surgery, as well as other bariatric surgeries, leads to a profound and durable resolution of Type 2 diabetes.
These procedures can result in sustained body weight loss and significant improvement in obesity-related comorbidities. Surgical weight loss procedures are recognized by Diabetes Canada to lead to significant and sustained weight loss and remission of Type 2 diabetes.
We recommend that you start walking up to 30 minutes per day as soon as you are able. However, strenuous exercise is not recommended until 3 to 4 weeks after your procedure. We recommend that you do not lift more than 10 to 15 pounds for at least two weeks.
